in my childhood in the kindergarten we had the same solution.:) We used them as horses!
There's a little community garden near me where they've painted tyres, stacked them on top of each other and filled them with compost, to make a very unusual plant pot. I like them.
I've seen people use tires in that way here as well. I always just assumed that that was a local solution! Good to see it used elsewhere.

I took a similar photo of a traffic cicle so decorated here in Seattle. I'll have to post that one one of these days!-Kim
